What Is Behind-the-Wheel Training?

Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) training is a vital part of Texas driver education. Included in Parent-Taught Drivers Ed, this course helps teens complete the 44 hours of in-car observation and driving practice mandated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Students fulfill these requirements with in-car observation and behind-the-wheel driving practice guided by a parent, approved guardian or certified traffic school instructor using step-by-step BTW course materials.

NOTE: Before beginning BTW training, students must complete the required driver education coursework through either our Parent-Taught or Self-Taught driver ed programs.

How the Course Works

Our BTW driving class helps teens learn and practice the safe driving skills necessary to pass the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) driving test and obtain a driver's license.

After completing the online portion of drivers ed and obtaining a learner's permit, students can begin the in-car training. Parents or other eligible instructors will guide the lessons using detailed course instructions provided in the BTW materials.

New drivers will learn:

  • Rules of the road
  • The dangers of driving
  • How to read and obey traffic signals and signs
  • Distracted and inclement weather driving
  • Defensive driving techniques for accident avoidance
  • And more!

The course allows the student and driving instructor to work together to fulfill the required 44 hours of BTW driving practice.
