What Are the Benefits of Taking this Class?

After completing self-taught Online Drivers Education training, you can meet the state-mandated requirement of 44 hours of in-car observation and behind-the-wheel driving practice by enrolling in Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) training. Students opting for this convenient BTW class will fulfill TDLR requirements by completing driving lessons with a parent, approved guardian, or traffic school instructor.

NOTE: Before beginning the BTW class, you must complete 32 hours of online instruction provided in the self-taught Driver Education course.

How the Course Works

Our BTW driving class helps teens learn and practice the safe driving skills necessary to pass the DPS driving test and obtain a driver's license.

Once you've completed 32 hours of online drivers ed lessons and have a learner's permit, you are ready to start the in-car portion of your driver education. The BTW course lets a parent — or eligible family member, guardian, or driving instructor — provide hands-on driving instruction using our easy-to-follow BTW lessons.

New drivers will learn about:

  • Rules of the road
  • The dangers of driving
  • How to read and obey traffic signals and signs
  • Distracted and inclement weather driving
  • Defensive driving techniques for accident avoidance
  • And more!

The course allows the student and driving instructor to work together to fulfill the required 44 hours of BTW driving practice.

BTW Training Can Save You Money!

Completing your mandatory behind-the-wheel training at a traditional traffic school with a qualified instructor is an option, but it can be costly. Our BTW training is a more affordable and convenient option because you learn to drive with a parent/guardian instead — and it's competitively priced to fit your budget.

BTW training is self-paced and has no time requirements. Our included course materials instruct parents on how to train new drivers and prepare them to obtain a driver's license.

Satisfy TDLR requirements:

  • 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
  • 7 hours of in-car observation
  • 30 hours of additional behind-the-wheel practice

The class provides downloadable PDFs for In-Car Observations, Behind-the-Wheel Instructions, In-Car Assessments, the 30-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Guide, the 30-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Practice Log, and the In-Car Observation & Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Log.

Choosing an Instructor for Your BTW Training

During the BTW class, a qualified adult must accompany the student. The adult must be a parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, or legal guardian (guardians must have proper court documents). Students can also take the BTW course with a certified instructor at a commercial driving school.
