What are the Benefits to Adding the Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Course?
Those who take our self-taught Online Driver Education course can meet the state-mandated requirement of 44 hours of behind-the-wheel and in-car observation by adding our Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) course after finishing the online course portion. Students opting for this convenient BTW course fulfill TDLR requirements when accompanied by a parent, an approved guardian, or a traffic school instructor.
NOTE: Before beginning the BTW course, the student must have already completed the 32 hours of online instruction provided in the self-taught Driver Education course.
How Our Behind-the-Wheel Course Works
Our BTW driving course helps teens safely learn and practice the skills necessary to pass the DPS driving test and obtain a driver's license.
Once they've completed the 32 hours of online course instruction and have a learner's permit, teens are ready to start the in-car portion of their driver education. The BTW course lets a parent — or eligible family member, guardian, or driving instructor — give the teen hands-on instruction using our easy-to-follow BTW course materials. The course allows the student and adult to work together to fulfill the required 44 hours of BTW driving practice.
Our Behind-the-Wheel Course Can Save You Money!
Completing your mandatory behind-the-wheel training at a traditional traffic school with a qualified instructor is an option, but it can be costly. Our BTW course also offers a more affordable opportunity by allowing a parent/guardian to assist instead — and it's competitively priced to fit your budget.
The BTW course is self-paced and has no time requirements. Our included course materials instruct parents on how to teach new drivers the rules of the road, the dangers of driving, how to read and obey traffic signals and signs, distracted driving, and inclement weather driving, defensive driving techniques to stay safe while driving, and more, to prepare them for obtaining a driver's license.
Our Behind-the-Wheel course satisfies the TDLR-required:
- 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
- 7 hours of in-car observation
- 30 hours of additional behind-the-wheel practice
- Course provides downloadable PDFs for In-Car Observations, Behind-the-Wheel Instructions, In-Car Assessments, the 30 Hour Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Guide, the 30 Hour Behind-the-Wheel Practice Log, and In-Car Observation & Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Log.
Choosing Your Behind-the-Wheel Instructor
During the BTW course, a qualified adult must accompany the student. The adult must be a parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, or legal guardian (guardians must have proper court documents). Students can also take the BTW course with a certified instructor at a commercial driving school.
