Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Parent-Taught and Self-Taught Driver Ed?

The only difference between the two courses is the behind-the-wheel (BTW) training portion. The online classroom portion is the same for both courses.

  • Parent-Taught Driver Ed: The student completes the required behind-the-wheel training with a parent or legal guardian.
  • Self-Taught Driver Ed: The student completes the behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor at a driving school.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Adult Driver Education course?

The Adult Driver Education course is designed for individuals 18 years of age and older. It is required for anyone ages 18 to 24 seeking their first Texas driver license. Adults 25 and older aren't required by the state to take drivers ed but may still choose to do it. Doing so is strongly encouraged.

Do these courses offer certificates upon completion?

Yes. All four of these courses provide a Certificate of Completion once you finish the program. In addition to a Certificate of Completion, students taking either the parent-taught or self-taught educational course will receive a digital DE-964 (Rev. 10/16/23) 6-Hour Permit Qualification Certificate after completing the first six hours of instruction.
